Serial Sheep Killer Escapes Animal Cruelty Charge
A cruel attacker butchered a family’s beloved pregnant pet sheep – but shockingly avoided a harsher animal cruelty charge. The public is furious.
Brutal Attack on Family’s Pet Sheep Primrose
Kieran Lawless, 28, from Kilrane, Co Wexford, was found guilty of a savage assault on Primrose, a dearly loved sheep. On May 18, 2022, Lawless trespassed into a private field armed with a 12-inch blade. He then ruthlessly chopped off one of Primrose’s legs in an appalling act of violence.
Despite this horrific act, Lawless was only prosecuted for criminal damage. He claimed the sheep was already dead when he attacked, allowing him to dodge animal cruelty charges. This loophole has sparked outrage among Primrose’s devastated owners and animal lovers across the country.
Outcry Over Legal Loopholes in Animal Protection
Primrose had been in perfect health just hours before the attack, peacefully grazing in her field. Animal welfare campaigners slammed the legal system for letting Lawless off lightly.
Prosecutors described the crime as “disturbing, brutal, and deeply distressing,” highlighting Lawless’s violent past. Still, current legislation meant he faced only criminal damage charges, frustrating judges and the public alike.
An animal welfare spokesperson blasted the verdict, saying:
“This was a grotesque attack on a defenceless animal — the fact that the law allowed him to be prosecuted only for criminal damage is an insult to Primrose’s memory and to her young owner.”
Calls for Tougher Animal Welfare Laws Grow Louder
The case has reignited demands for Ireland to overhaul its animal protection laws. Campaigners want offenders charged with serious animal cruelty regardless of the victim’s condition before attack.
Lawless’s troubled history includes prior convictions for assault and public order offences. Although he received a custodial sentence for criminal damage, critics say this punishment falls far short of justice for Primrose and her family.
