Tragic Blaze Claims Life of Darrell Wright in East London
An inquest has been launched after Darrell Michael Wright, 63, died from smoke inhalation in a house fire on Belgrave Avenue in the early hours of April 30.
Firefighters’ Rescue Efforts End in Tragedy
Emergency services were called just before 4.40am, with crews from Harold Hill, Romford, Hornchurch, and Dagenham rushing to the scene. Police were alerted by the fire brigade. Mr Wright was found unresponsive on the ground floor. Despite desperate resuscitation attempts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman escaped the blaze and was treated for smoke inhalation on-site. Another man from a nearby property also received treatment for smoke exposure.
Police Rule Out Suspicious Circumstances
Authorities confirmed the fire spread across both the ground and first floors but have ruled out any foul play. The case was handed to the East London Coroner’s Court for further examination.
Post-mortem results showed Mr Wright’s death was caused by severe coronary artery atherosclerotic disease combined with smoke inhalation.
Inquest to Resume This December
“I’m satisfied on those facts this death occurred in circumstances requiring an inquest,” said Coroner Nadia Persaud.
The inquest opened on Monday, June 23, at East London Coroner’s Court and was adjourned to allow further investigations. The final hearing is set for December.
Mr Wright’s family have been granted “interested persons” status, giving them full access to evidence and the right to cross-examine witnesses.
The coroner has also requested reports and statements from the fire brigade, police, ambulance service, Mr Wright’s GP, and his family to aid the ongoing inquiry.
