Lamb Mauled as Dog Pack Runs Amok in Kent Countryside
Kent Police have launched a probe after a brutal sheep-worrying incident left a lamb badly injured in Wittersham on Sunday, 30 May 2021.
Three Men and Two Dogs Spotted Fleeing Scene
Witnesses reported seeing three young men with two dogs – a whippet/lurcher and a terrier – sprinting from a field next to the River Rother along The Street in Ham Green.
The men reportedly threw objects at a bystander, who miraculously escaped injury.
Suspects Described – Police Urge Caution
- Man 1: White, around 20, dark hooded top with a tick emblem on the back, jeans.
- Man 2: White, about 20, baseball cap, hooded top, jeans.
- Man 3: White, roughly 20, hooded top, jeans.
PC Dan Perry warned dog owners to keep their pets on leads around livestock: “Please follow signs and stick to footpaths. They’re there to keep everyone safe.”
He added, “Report any dog attacks on livestock to Kent Police – call 101 or 999 if a crime is happening.”
Sheep-Worrying: Know the Law
Under the Animals Act 1971, landowners or anyone protecting livestock may lawfully shoot or injure dogs worrying sheep without legal consequences.
Dog owners could face criminal charges if their pets worry or chase livestock, causing injury, suffering, or loss. Dogs must be kept on leads or under strict control in fields with sheep.
