Drug Addict Jailed for Robbing Vulnerable Relative Four Times
Liam Oates has been locked up for four years after repeatedly robbing a vulnerable family member to feed his drug habit. The 29-year-old turned violent, threatening and intimidating his relative in a series of chilling attacks.
Grim Incidents of Violence and Theft
- Oates grabbed his relative by the throat, demanding £140 meant for a birthday gift.
- On 4 May, he threatened to smash up their home if they didn’t hand over nearly £100 from their pension.
- He returned on 11 and 12 May to steal another £100, issuing further threats of violence and property damage.
- The final incident forced the victim to flee their home for safety, prompting a friend to call the police.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery
Detective Sergeant Tom Carver of Nottinghamshire Police condemned Oates’ violent acts against his own family. “Robbery is a frightening and violent crime. To turn that violence against a member of your own family is truly awful,” he said.
“I would like to commend the bravery of the victim who found incredible strength in coming forward, which has led to Oates being behind bars. I urge anyone suffering similar abuse to come forward. No one should have to live in fear.”
Sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court
Oates, from Valentine Avenue, Selston, pleaded guilty to four counts of robbery and was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 23 October. The court heard how the attacks all happened at a house in Selston.
