Family of Tragic Boy Await Justice After Fatal Plumstead Crash Is Delayed
The family of eight-year-old Mustafa Ahmed, who was killed by a reckless motorbike rider in Plumstead, faces a frustrating wait as court delays push back sentencing.
Fatal Crash Shocks Plumstead Community
On February 19 last year, 20-year-old Nicholas Hopkins slammed his motorbike into Mustafa, his 10-year-old brother, and their father while they crossed Plumstead Road. Mustafa died instantly at the scene. Their father suffered severe injuries and slipped into a coma for two months.
Dangerous Driving and More: Hopkins Admits Guilty Charges
In November, Hopkins pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving, driving uninsured, and possession of class B drugs. Justice seemed close — but it wasn’t to be.
Sentencing Postponed at Last Minute
Hopkins was due for sentencing on Friday, January 26, at Inner London Crown Court. But the hearing was abruptly adjourned because the prosecutor was stuck at the Old Bailey handling another serious case.
Judge Freya Newbery said: “For really unfortunate reasons, the prosecutor was involved in a very serious sentencing at the Old Bailey and couldn’t get here until late afternoon. I did have to put the sentence back to another day.”
She added: “I know this will be very disappointing for you, Mr Hopkins, but also for your victims who are anxiously waiting for the sentence.”
The new sentencing date is set for next Friday, February 2.
Heartbreaking Loss on the Way to the Mosque
Mustafa was on his way to the mosque with his family on that tragic Sunday evening. The collision has left the community mournful and the family desperate for closure.
Detective Sergeant Sam Miles from the Roads and Transport unit continues to investigate the incident.
