Ex-Choirmaster from Portsmouth Jailed for Four Decades of Child Abuse
A former choirmaster and teacher from Portsmouth, Mark Burgess, 68, has been found guilty of sexually abusing children over nearly 40 years. The Hilsea resident faced 52 charges after a major probe by Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Marmion team.
Decades of Abuse Behind Choir Curtains
Burgess’s crimes span from 1975 to 2009, targeting 13 children under 16 while he led choirs at All Saints Church in Portsmouth and Westbourne Choir in Sussex. His roles as a music teacher and choir master brought him into close contact with vulnerable youngsters.
- 27 counts of indecent assault
- 17 counts of gross indecency with a child
- 5 counts of buggery
- 1 count of attempted indecent assault
- 2 counts of sexual activity with a child
The jury cleared him of 4 charges but found him guilty of 48. The abuse took place at his home during piano lessons, the church vestry, his car, choir trips, and school music rooms.
Survivors Speak Out: ‘He Wrecked Our Childhoods’
“The abuse was horrific and calculated. We had passions: music, singing, and the church. He exploited those passions for his ends,” survivors said.
“He manipulated, groomed, charmed, and bribed his way into our lives for his sexual gratification. The trauma will stay with us forever.”
“Despite the scars of guilt and shame, we are stronger than him. Today, he will be remembered as a manipulative paedophile, not a musician or teacher.”
Police Praise Courage, Call for More Victims to Come Forward
Detective Inspector Adam Edwards praised the survivors’ bravery and slammed Burgess’s lies. “Justice has been served,” he said.
Operation Marmion focuses on tackling long-term abuse within institutions or by prominent figures. Anyone affected is urged to contact police on 101 or reach out to Childline (0800 11 11) and NSPCC (0808 800 5000).
Burgess remains in custody and will return to Portsmouth Crown Court for sentencing on 30 June.
