Justice For All: Thousands More to Get Help with Court Fees as Ministry of Justice Overhauls Scheme
The Ministry of Justice, backed by Mike Freer MP, has announced a major shake-up to the ‘Help with Fees’ scheme. Thousands more people struggling with the rising cost of living will now qualify for vital financial aid to cover court and tribunal fees. The move aims to keep justice affordable and accessible.
Big Boost to Eligibility Thresholds
The ‘Help with Fees’ scheme offers financial support to those with low income and little savings, ensuring they can still fight legal battles without breaking the bank. Now, income and capital eligibility limits have been hiked significantly. For example:
- A couple with two kids under 14 sees their monthly income threshold rise from £1,875 to £2,980.
- A single person without children gets a bump from £1,170 to £1,420 per month.
Plus, parents with children aged 14 or older will receive extra support recognising the higher costs of older kids.
Scheme Made Easier and More Flexible
The application process has been streamlined. Applicants can now let their legal reps handle the paperwork, cutting hassle. The scheme handed out £80 million last year alone, helping with everything from family disputes and housing issues to personal injury compensation claims.
Self-employed folks and shift workers will also benefit. The scheme now better reflects their variable incomes, offering fairer access to aid. Capital limits have been raised, so more savings won’t push people off the scheme. Importantly, the age cut-off has gone up from 61 to the state pension age of 66, widening the safety net.
Minister Vows Justice Accessible to All
“It’s crucial that everyone, regardless of their finances, can access the justice they deserve,” said Justice Minister Mike Freer. “Since 2013, tens of thousands have benefited, and these reforms make the scheme even kinder to those in greatest need.”
Reforms Backed by Public Support
The changes come following a public consultation that overwhelmingly supported expanding the scheme. The revamped ‘Help with Fees’ programme is set to roll out later this year, promising fairer and wider financial help for those facing legal battles.
