Jealous Thug Jailed for Hammer and Samurai Sword Attack on Ex’s Friend
A violent jealous ex has been slammed with over 11 years behind bars after launching a savage attack with a hammer and samurai sword in his former partner’s home.
Brutal Home Invasion in Gateshead
John Williams, 34, stormed into a Gateshead house on Springfield Road last September just two weeks after splitting from his ex. Newcastle Crown Court heard how he barged into the bedroom to find his ex-partner’s friend, a 28-year-old man, drinking with a woman aged 47.
Hammer Blows and Sword Slashes
Jealousy boiled over as Williams struck the man multiple times with a hammer before ripping a samurai sword from a cupboard. In a chilling move, he slashed a phone cord to stop the victim calling for help. He then used the sword to stab and slash at the man, who finally managed to escape and dial 999 for urgent help.
Police Arrest and Lengthy Sentence
Officers swiftly arrested Williams, who was charged with attempted murder but eventually pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. On Friday, he was locked up for 11-and-a-half years.
“This was a sickening and unprovoked attack that was fuelled by jealousy and could have easily led to death,” said Detective Constable Kelly Stephenson.
“The level of violence was horrific. Whenever someone picks up a sword or hammer in an assault, the consequences can be fatal. We welcome the lengthy sentence and hope it brings comfort to the victims.”
Williams was also found guilty of breaching a suspended sentence and will now start serving his prison term.
