Kent Police Smash Stalking With 100 Protection Orders
Kent Police are cracking down on stalking with a powerful new weapon – Stalking Protection Orders (SPOs). These orders let officers act fast to shield victims before a case reaches court, forcing suspects to register with the police and face hefty fines or jail time if they break the rules.
First SPOs Target Persistent Stalkers
The very first SPO was slapped on a 54-year-old man from Rochester in February 2020. He’s banned from contacting the victim, spying on her, or even showing up at her home. The order lasts five years.
Another tough order was handed out in April 2022 to a 38-year-old from Ashford. This 10-year order stops him from contacting the victim directly or via anyone else, stalking them, or going near their address. He must also register his phone and vehicle and attend therapy to curb his behaviour.
100th Order Marks a Major Milestone
The milestone 100th SPO was granted in December 2022 following serious stalking offences including repeated unwanted contact, controlling behaviour, and threats to kill. The 28-year-old from Thanet isn’t allowed to contact the victim or their family, post about them on social media, own more than one phone, or obstruct police investigations. He must also notify authorities about any future relationships to protect potential partners.
Police Vow to Keep Victims Safe
Assistant Chief Constable Tracey Harman said: “We are pleased to have secured 100 Stalking Protection Orders, a vital tool that helps protect victims while full investigations continue.”
“They’re not a replacement for prosecution but an important way to keep people safe. Victims often want intervention over prosecution, especially in domestic abuse cases, and Kent Police are committed to safeguarding victims and connecting them with support services.”
“Stalking can devastate lives. We remain focused on justice and helping victims move forward.”
