Tragic Cyclist Death at Holborn Junction
A horrifying crash at Southampton Row and Theobalds Road in Holborn claimed the life of Dr Marta Krawiec, 41, on August 4, 2021. The paediatrician was killed after colliding with an HGV driven by 69-year-old Kevin Allen. The heartbreaking case wrapped up in court on January 12, 2024, with Allen found guilty.
HGV Driver’s Faulty Manoeuvre Sparks Fatal Crash
Dr Krawiec was cycling when the crash happened. Allen, a seasoned HGV driver since 1989, was in the middle lane at traffic lights, waiting to turn left. Although that lane was meant for going straight, Allen claimed the length of his lorry forced him to use it for the turn.
The court heard Allen failed to signal his turn for a full 45 seconds at the lights, only flashing his indicator after he had already started turning. This crucial error set the stage for tragedy.
Fatal Impact and Aftermath
As the lights changed, Dr Krawiec cycled ahead behind and to the left of Allen’s lorry. Allen began his left turn and struck her, knocking her from her bike. She was trapped under a wheel and shouted “NO,” a scream heard by a nearby taxi driver.
Dr Krawiec was pronounced dead at the scene. She worked at an NHS clinic in Clapham, known for her dedication to caring for children.
Driver Error to Blame, Says Prosecutor
- Conditions were perfect, and both vehicles were in good nick.
- Allen was driving slowly at 13mph and was sober.
- No other factors contributed to the accident.
Prosecutor Paul Casey said Allen’s driver error was the sole cause of the tragic death.
In police interviews, Allen said he regularly delivered steel to a nearby building site and was familiar with the area. He admitted checking mirrors but claimed Dr Krawiec was in his blind spot. CCTV later proved he hadn’t signalled before turning, contradicting his initial statement.
Guilty Verdict on Causing Death by Dangerous Driving
After the trial, Allen pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving, but prosecutors rejected this plea. They insisted his actions amounted to dangerous driving, a more serious charge, leading to the guilty verdict.
