Tragic Death of 25-Year-Old After Christmas Day Crash in Central London

Aidan Chapman, 25, died in hospital on New Year’s Eve following a horrific road traffic collision in central London on Christmas Day. The accident happened around 12:45 am on Christmas morning when a car was reported driving the wrong way down Shaftesbury Avenue, W1.

Family Left Heartbroken

Aidan’s devastated parents paid tribute to their son, saying:

“The loss of our beautiful son is a parent’s worst nightmare. We are utterly devastated with the loss of Aidan, who enriched everyone’s lives. He was a loving, kind, funny soul, and the world is a darker place without him. We, his parents, have lost the best part of ourselves.”

Man Charged After Crash

A 30-year-old man was arrested and charged following the incident. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on December 27 and faces serious charges, including:

  • Four counts of attempted murder
  • Causing serious injury while driving disqualified
  • Dangerous driving
  • Possession of a bladed article in public

The suspect is remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey on January 24. Charges are set for review after Aidan’s death.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command said:

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends at this difficult time. This appears to be an isolated incident and is not terror-related.

We urge anyone with CCTV, dash cam, or mobile footage of the crash, or who had contact with the suspect that night, to come forward.”

Police urge anyone with information to call 101 or message @MetCC quoting CAD 233/25DEC. Photos and videos can also be submitted via the Public Portal.
