Croydon Man Jailed for Over 14 Years for Shocking Sexual Assault

Heilab Assefa Sentenced

Heilab Assefa, 29, from London Road, Croydon, was slammed with 14 years and four months behind bars. That’s not all – he also got an extra eight years on licence. The charges? Grievous bodily harm and multiple sexual offences against the same victim. The Croydon Crown Court handed down the brutal sentence on October 1.

Brave Police Work Brings Predator to Justice

Met Police officers worked round the clock with relentless 24-hour shifts to nail Assefa. Detective Sergeant Tim Walter, who led the probe, called him a “dangerous sexual predator.” The attack happened around midnight on November 18, 2023, shortly after Assefa met the victim for the first time that evening. The assault was so vicious, Assefa filmed it.

“This sentence sends a clear message to would-be offenders – the police will actively pursue and prosecute offenders using the full extent of the law,” said DS Walter.

Detectives Hannah Bates and Rose Mason were praised for their expert work securing the crucial evidence.

Horrific Night in Croydon

The victim was violently assaulted on London Road just hours after meeting Assefa. Police swooped and arrested him at the scene. Specialist officers worked tirelessly to build a solid case. Charges were filed the very next day. Facing overwhelming evidence, Assefa pleaded guilty on June 3, 2024, to grievous bodily harm, two counts of sexual assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault.

Met Police Step Up to Protect Women

Tackling violence against women and girls is now a top priority for the Met. From specialist squads to local neighbourhood officers, the force’s “New Met for London” initiative aims to protect the vulnerable. They’re targeting predatory offenders and working hard to rebuild public trust damaged by past failings.

“Violence against women and girls has a profound and long-lasting impact. It affects communities and how safe people feel,” DS Walter added. “Our job is to safeguard victims and deliver justice. We will not stop in our mission to tackle this violence.”
