Gatwick Airport border force officers uncovered 4.5 kilograms of cocaine stashed in a secret compartment inside Seth Allen’s suitcase on January 16.
Allen, 28, from Birmingham’s Broad Meadow Lane, admitted he agreed to smuggle the drugs after losing his job late last year.
From Machine Setter to Drug Courier: A Desperate Gamble
The father had been living on just £300 a month from Universal Credit since losing his machine setter job in late 2023. With two kids and a third on the way, Allen confessed he felt pressured to take the illegal route.
His barrister, David Forsyth, told the Old Bailey on March 13 that Allen hesitated initially while in Jamaica but eventually gave in to the pressure to smuggle the drugs.
Despite cooperating with investigators, Allen refused to reveal who was higher up the drug chain— the person who arranged and paid for his flight to Jamaica.
Judge Issues Stern Warning: ‘Drug Couriers Have Blood on Their Hands’
“It’s not too dramatic to say anyone who involves themselves in drug misuse… whether users or couriers, have blood on their hands… however remotely,” said Judge Hillen.
Allen was sentenced to six years behind bars, required to serve half the term.
National Crime Agency Branch Commander Chris Duplock praised the Border Force for their role in cracking down on drug smuggling and dismantling criminal gangs.
