Arson Attack After Shop Theft Attempt in Folkestone
A man has been jailed after setting fire to a shop in Folkestone following a failed theft attempt that turned violent.
Thief Turns Arsonist
Shaun Brocklehurst, 42, tried to steal alcohol from a grocery store on Cheriton High Street on Sunday, August 13, 2023. When caught, he got into a fight with another person before storming out.
But that was just the start. About 30 minutes later, Brocklehurst came back carrying a small fuel canister. Without hesitation, he poured flammable liquid over the front of the shop and set it ablaze. He then fled, leaving chaos behind.
Quick-Thinking Public Douses Flames
Thanks to the fast action of a local passerby, the fire was quickly put out, preventing any injuries or further damage.
Justice Served
After a thorough probe by East Kent CID, Brocklehurst, of Phillip Road, Folkestone, was arrested and charged with attempted robbery and arson reckless as to endangering life. On February 28, 2024, he pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court and was sentenced to three years behind bars.
“Brocklehurst’s actions were utterly reckless and put the public at serious risk,” said Detective Sergeant Joshua Wratten. “We are lucky no one was hurt. This sentence sends a clear message that such dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated.”
