Knife-Wielding Man Dies After Police Called to Disturbance in North London
A frantic 999 call came through at 8.07pm on Thursday, 22 July, reporting a man acting erratically with a knife at a home in James Gardens, N22. Those around him feared for his safety and dialled the police.
Officers Intervene to Protect Man and Public
The man, in his 30s, was found visibly distressed by officers. Police tried to calm him down but soon realised he needed urgent medical help. The London Ambulance Service (LAS) was quickly called to the scene.
Out of concern he might harm himself or others, officers briefly handcuffed the man to keep the situation under control.
Tragic Hospital Death After Condition Worsens
The man was taken by ambulance to a north London hospital. Sadly, his condition deteriorated, and he died at 6.56pm on Saturday, 24 July.
His family has been informed and is supported by a specialist family liaison officer who is keeping them updated on developments.
Official Investigation Underway
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have been notified, as is standard procedure in such cases.
Chief Superintendent Treena Fleming, commander for policing in Haringey and Enfield, said: “This was a very distressing incident, and our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time. A thorough investigation is underway to fully understand the circumstances.”
“Our officers bravely intervened in a very upsetting scene. They prevented further injury and ensured urgent medical help was on hand. We continue to support the family and take steps to keep everyone else safe.”
“I ask the public to avoid speculation. The IOPC are involved, and a full review of bodycam footage and witness statements will be completed. Such transparency is usual in these cases, and we will provide updates as soon as we can.”
