Cash crooks caged after cops nab £270K stash

Two money launderers have been slammed with prison time after detectives caught them red-handed with over £270,000 in dirty cash.

Rahman and Oscroft caught with bundles of illegal money

Omerfaraz Rahman, 43, formerly of Woodside, Gillingham, and Jonathan Oscroft, 36, of Carnarvon Grove, Nottingham, were busted holding huge sums of cash following a Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate investigation.

Both men pleaded guilty to money laundering charges and were sentenced to three years each at Maidstone Crown Court on 10 August 2023.

How police caught them red-handed in Nottingham

On the evening of Monday 17 September 2018, officers spotted Rahman hop into the passenger seat of a Porsche driven by Oscroft on a quiet residential street in Nottingham. The pair drove a short distance before Rahman got out carrying a carrier bag.

He stashed the bag in the boot of an Audi, which then headed to Medway. Police stopped the car on Maidstone Road, Wigmore. Rahman admitted there was around £35,000 cash onboard. But officers found £61,155 and seized a phone showing pictures of stacks of banknotes.

Rahman’s home was searched, uncovering a cash counting machine, bank statements, and notebooks listing cash amounts.

Oscroft arrested with massive cash haul and flash Porsche

The carrier bag bore a forensic link to Oscroft, who was arrested at his Nottingham home on 8 January 2019. Police found a whopping £212,674 in cash, a cash counting machine, and the Porsche Oscroft drove earlier — believed bought with crime proceeds.

Phone evidence linked him to illegal drug dealings.

Detective warns: Crime doesn’t pay

“Most people don’t hide vast sums of cash at home or in their cars unless they have something to hide,” said Detective Inspector Ian Sanderson. “Rahman and Oscroft tried to hide their criminal activity. Neither could explain their huge cash pile. The evidence proved the money was earned illegally. We want this to send a message: if you’re making money through crime, we will catch you.”
