Police Under Fire Over Tragic Death of Stabbed Teen

Two Met Police officers are facing a criminal probe over claims they failed to give proper first aid to a 20-year-old man who died after a stabbing in Thornton Heath. Usmaan Mahmood passed away in hospital a day after being attacked on June 13.

IOPC Launches Investigation Into Officers’ Response

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is examining whether the officers who first arrived at the scene acted quickly and correctly. The officers were called to the incident just after 4pm and immediately requested an ambulance. When reinforcements arrived, they gave CPR and other urgent first aid.

Questions Over Officers’ Medical Aid

Concerns have been raised about whether the initial first aid provided was good enough. The IOPC’s probe focuses on the nature and timing of the medical help given by those first on the scene. The two Met officers now face a possible gross misconduct inquiry and a criminal investigation for misconduct in public office. This doesn’t automatically mean charges or disciplinary action will follow.

Family’s Tragedy and Next Steps

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to Usmaan Mahmood’s family,” said IOPC Director Mel Palmer. “Our investigation will carefully review the decisions and actions of the officers involved.”

The final report will decide if the case is referred to the Crown Prosecution Service and whether disciplinary measures are needed.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Joshua Munoz has been charged with Usmaan Mahmood’s murder as the IOPC continues to probe all aspects of the case.
