Toddler Tortured to Death: Mother and Ex jailed for Life
A mother and her ex have been locked up for the brutal murder of 18-month-old Alfie Phillips. The innocent toddler suffered a grotesque 70 injuries, including broken ribs, arms, and legs, in what prosecutors called a night of “violent discipline.”
Whisky, Cocaine and a Horrific Night in Kent
Sian Hedges, 27, and Jack Benham, 35, were found guilty of killing Alfie on November 28, 2020, at Benham’s caravan in Hernhill, near Faversham, Kent. Both had been drinking whisky and taking cocaine, which was also found in Alfie’s tiny body.
Frenzied Attack and Sick Texts Revealed
Judge Richard Griffith-Jones described the ordeal as “unimaginable pain” inflicted during a “frenzied attack.” The court heard disturbing texts from Benham urging Hedges to “bite Alfie hard” after she complained he bit her, calling the tot a “cry baby” and threatening him for minor misbehaviour.
Life Sentences with Minimum Terms
- Benham: Minimum 23 years
- Hedges: Minimum 19 years
Alfie’s father, Sam Phillips, heartbreakingly called his son “good as gold” and “lively,” recalling that there was “never a dull moment” with him.
Denials and Lies Unravel
Both Hedges and Benham tried to blame Alfie’s injuries on accidents, such as playing with keys or getting fingers caught in a dog gate. Prosecutor Jennifer Knight KC blasted their claims as lies, saying the fatal injuries were no accident but *deliberately* inflicted that night.
“The fact this did not happen by chance is because both defendants agreed to deliver violent discipline which led to Alfie’s death,” Knight said.
Hedges, from Yelverton in Devon, and Benham, had steadfastly denied causing harm. Benham bizarrely claimed he woke with Alfie under his leg, fearing he’d suffocated the boy – a desperate defence rejected by the court.
This tragic case exposes the darkest horrors of child abuse and shows how justice swiftly comes down hard on those who harm the most vulnerable among us.
