Online Troll Jailed for 15 Months After Ruthless Abuse on Grieving Widow
Persistent Troll Sparks Fury with Sick Social Media Attacks
Katie Bell, 27, has been slammed with a 15-month jail sentence after relentlessly tormenting a grieving widow online — despite a restraining order. Bell had first faced a suspended jail term in 2021 over abusive posts and threats on social media, but she quickly returned to vicious trolling.
‘Cowardly’ Troll Targeted Widow and Police on Twitter and Instagram
At Sheffield Crown Court, Recorder Andrew Smith MBE branded Bell a “coward” for the distress she caused. Bell pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order twice, breaking her suspended sentence, and sending malicious messages on Twitter and Instagram. She attacked victims directly and hurled inflammatory remarks on news sites and police pages.
Heartbreaking Victim Statement Reveals Toll of Abuse
One victim told the court how Bell’s cruel comments about her late husband tore her apart. Bell derided tributes with sick remarks like “Serves him right,” ignoring legally binding orders not to contact or abuse the widow.
In another callous episode, Bell mocked a missing person appeal from Merseyside Police, callously tweeting, “Serves her right if she is dead.”
Message Sent: Online Abuse Has Real-Life Consequences
Recorder Smith highlighted Bell’s cowardly habit of hiding behind a screen to provoke pain. He made clear she was not a physical threat, but a vindictive online harasser. The 15-month sentence sends a stark warning: the law will not tolerate relentless, malicious online abuse.
This case underlines how damaging cyberbullying is to victims’ mental health and well-being, and shows the justice system’s firm commitment to cracking down on harmful online behaviour.
