Dartford Post Boxes Turn Union Jack and More in Wild Vandal Spree
Union Jack Joins a Riot of Colours on Dartford Post Boxes
A Dartford post box has become the latest target in a bizarre vandalism wave, now sporting the colours of the Union Jack. This latest stunt adds to a surge of what officials call “criminal damage” plaguing the borough’s iconic red post boxes.
Golden Week Sparks Series of Colourful Attacks
Between January 31 and February 5, 26 post boxes were painted gold – the majority around Temple Hill. Despite Royal Mail’s blitz repainting efforts, new, vivid designs have continued popping up.
- February 4: A black-and-white “cow print” spotted on Farnol Road.
- February 19: Pink and gold splotches turned some boxes into Mr Blobby lookalikes from the 90s TV hit Noel’s House Party, including two in Temple Hill.
- Later: A purple, gold, and red post box dubbed “Creme Egg” appeared on St Vincents Road.
- Most recently, on February 27, the Union Jack design flourished on Trevithick Drive.
Kent Police Investigate, Arrest Made
Kent Police confirm ongoing probes into the vandalism spree. A man was arrested on February 13 over the first post box paintings but has been released on bail until May 4 pending continued investigations.
Community Divided Over Postal Artwork
Locals have been split on the colourful takeovers. Some praise the bright artwork for bringing fun and cheer, while others condemn it as costly defacement of cherished public assets. Social media buzz reflects the tug-of-war between appreciation and frustration.
As the council and police race to stop the vandalism, Dartford residents remain watchful, eager to protect their neighbourhood’s looks while adjusting to these surprising pops of street art.
