Two Charged After Shocking Robbery of 90-Year-Old Pensioner in Rainham

Police have charged two suspects following a brazen handbag robbery targeting a nonagenarian pensioner in Rainham’s High Street.

Attack on Elderly Woman Caught on Monday Afternoon

The terrifying incident unfolded on Monday, March 11, 2024, between 1pm and 1:10pm. A woman in her 90s was reportedly assaulted by a man and a woman who then snatched her handbag. The shocking crime has sent ripples through the local community.

Suspects Apprehended Hours After Distress Call

Emergency services acted fast. Officers rushed to the scene after the victim’s call. Within three hours, they arrested two suspects believed to be behind the attack.

  • Jerry Maughan, 24, from Maya Place, New Southgate, London
  • Mary-Jo Smith, 21, of Caley Road, Tunbridge Wells

Both were formally charged with robbery.

Court Dates Set as Community Demands Justice

Jerry Maughan appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on March 13 and has been remanded in custody. He will next face maidstone/" title="Maidstone" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Maidstone Crown Court, date pending. Mary-Jo Smith was granted conditional bail and will appear before Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on April 26.
