Driver Sentenced Over Tragic Death of 10-Year-Old Boy
John Harkins, 35, broke down in tears as he was sentenced to over six years behind bars for the death of 10-year-old Charlie Lowe. The youngster was fatally hit by Harkins’ speeding car in April last year.
Speeding at Over Double the Limit
The fatal crash happened on Abingdon Road, Walton, liverpool/" title="Liverpool" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Liverpool. Harkins was driving his Ford Kuga at 51mph in a 20mph zone when he struck Charlie as the boy crossed the road after leaving his mother’s car. The impact left Charlie with unsurvivable injuries, and he died the following morning at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
Heartbreaking Courtroom Apology
During the Liverpool Crown Court hearing, Harkins sobbed as he told Charlie’s family, “I’m sorry, I’m really sorry.” He admitted to causing death by dangerous driving and received a ban from driving for eight years and four months.
The court was told Harkins had no previous offences and was returning home from work. Despite claims he didn’t realise his speed, evidence showed he sped throughout the journey. Investigators said the tragedy may have been less severe if he had stuck to the legal limit.
Judge Condemns Speeding, Pays Tribute to Charlie
Judge Garrett Byrne acknowledged Harkins’ remorse but said nothing can undo the devastation to Charlie’s family. “This is a profoundly sad case where a young boy, only 10 years old, lost his life,” said the judge. “The sentence I pass today can never reflect the loss they have suffered.”
Charlie’s family described him as “intelligent, bright, and loving” – a “void that can never be filled” since his heartbreaking death.
