Man convicted of killing James Stokoe in brutal 2020 attack
James Stokoe, 40, died after a savage assault by 34-year-old Alexander Layton on Trenchard Avenue, Thornaby, back in May 2020. Layton was found guilty by a unanimous jury at Teesside Crown Court and faces sentencing tomorrow, Tuesday 7th December.
Family Devastated by Tragic Loss
James’ family struggled to put their heartbreak into words. A close relative said: “Nothing will ever bring back our beloved James. We have to live with the consequences of what happened for the rest of our lives. He was a much loved husband, father, son and son-in-law and is dearly missed by us all.”
They added: “James was treasured by so many for his wonderful, kind and gentle nature. Losing him is unimaginable.”
The family has asked for privacy to grieve in peace during this heartbreaking time.
Police Praise Family’s Courage
Senior Investigating Officer, Temporary Detective Superintendent Helen Barker, spoke about the horror of the attack.
“James Stokoe was subjected to a horrifying attack which ended his life in the most tragic way. The incident happened in front of James’ young son, which will no doubt have had a huge impact on him.”
“This ordeal has traumatised James’ entire family. My thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.”
“Now that Alexander Layton is found guilty, I hope the sentence provides some comfort to James’ loved ones. Nothing can bring James back, but we expect a lengthy custodial sentence for Layton.”
