Folkestone Trio Convicted Over Botched Channel Migrant Smuggling
Three men from Folkestone have been found guilty after multiple failed attempts to smuggle Vietnamese migrants across the English Channel. Authorities branded the operation as “reckless and dangerous”.
Shoddy Boats and Narrow Escapes
Freddy Lawrence, 57, Keith Baigent, 63, both from Folkestone, and Paul Giglia, 64, from nearby Cheriton, masterminded the smuggling ring in August 2018. Over ten days, they tried five times to ferry migrants from France to the UK using unsafe boats and poor navigation.
Four of these attempts involved the Sorel Light, a £30,000 vessel bought by Lawrence despite warnings about its unsafe condition. The boat suffered engine failure mid-Channel, forcing Lawrence to swap to a smaller craft that also broke down.
On their final attempt, French police, tipped off by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), intercepted the Sorel Light near Wimereux. Migrants were seen wading through the sea, flashing lights to signal the boat.
Eleven Vietnamese migrants and two accomplices were arrested onboard. One migrant fell into the water but was later captured.
International Sting Nets More Culprits
The smuggling plot also involved three others: Ronald Scott, Toby Lake, and Stephen Chapman, who coordinated operations from France. All were caught during that last interception and sentenced to 1 to 2½ years in French prison.
Justice Served – Sentencing Awaits
Lawrence, Baigent, and Giglia were arrested in October 2018 and charged with assisting unlawful immigration. Lawrence pleaded guilty last month at canterbury/" title="Canterbury" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Canterbury Crown Court. Baigent and Giglia were convicted earlier this week. Sentencing is due in 2025.
Lawrence is already behind bars for unrelated drug offences.
