Two Men Jailed for Trying to Smuggle Guns and Ammo into the UK

Two London men have been slapped with nearly 17 years behind bars for attempting to smuggle four Heckler & Koch handguns and 100 rounds of 9mm ammo into the UK.

Caught Red-Handed at Channel Tunnel

Steven Landers, 56, from Elephant and Castle, and Steven Mulroe, 41, from Battersea, were sentenced to eight years and three months each at maidstone/" title="Maidstone" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Maidstone Crown Court yesterday.

The National Crime Agency launched an investigation after Border Force discovered the weapons in May. Officers found the firearms stashed in a bag hidden beneath the boot floor carpet of Landers’ BMW at the Channel Tunnel terminal in Coquelles, France.

Wild Excuses Fail to Impress

During interviews, Landers claimed they were heading to Amsterdam to “visit brothels and smoke” and insisted he knew nothing about the guns or ammunition.

He also gave a bizarre account of stopping the car due to heavy rain, staying overnight in a hotel, but couldn’t recall the country or hotel name. Landers pleaded, “Someone must have put the guns in the car” without his knowledge.

Justice Served

The pair’s flimsy excuses didn’t convince the court, which handed down hefty jail sentences to keep illegal firearms off the streets.
