Two Sentenced for Brutal Street Murder in East London
Almal Islam, 22, and Mofizur Rahman, 21, both from East London, have been found guilty of murdering Alimuz Zaman. The verdict came after a tense trial at the Old Bailey concluded on Monday, 21 February.
Life Behind Bars for Savage Attack
Islam was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 22 years, while Rahman received life imprisonment with a minimum term of 24 years. The pair launched a violent assault on Alimuz in broad daylight, leaving the community in shock.
Witnesses Saw It All
Detective Sergeant Gurj Singh, who led the investigation, said:
“This was a violent and brutal attack carried out in the middle of the street on a Sunday afternoon. It is clear from witnesses who were at the scene that Islam and Rahman targeted Alimuz. Both had attended the scene armed with weapons and had the intent to inflict serious harm.”
He added: “Neither Islam nor Rahman has explained why they attacked Alimuz so brutally and so openly. This has understandably caused significant shock and distress to Alimuz’s family and the wider community. I hope these convictions bring some sense of justice.”
The Gruesome Details of the Attack
The court heard the brutal assault took place on St Paul’s Way, E3, at around 4:30pm on Sunday, 26 May 2019. Rahman stabbed Alimuz in the leg while Islam battered him with a wrench.
Emergency services rushed the victim to hospital, but he tragically died later that night from blood loss caused by the stab wound.
Key witnesses identified the suspects, and CCTV footage confirmed their role in the attack. Both men subsequently handed themselves into police on 30 May before being arrested and charged with murder.
