Hero Cops Save Two Lives in One Wild Night Shift
PC Mabz Rahman and PC Ryan McCarthy’s late shift on Thursday, 26 August turned into a life-or-death marathon. Called by the London Ambulance Service at 9.26pm to Somerford Grove, N16, they found a man unconscious and not breathing in the street. The man was in cardiac arrest, with a rolled-back tongue and a head injury from a fall.
The quick-thinking officers rolled him onto his back. PC Rahman started chest compressions while PC McCarthy managed his airway and prepped a defibrillator. Moments later, the man gasped for air and a pulse returned. Paramedics rushed him to an east London hospital where he later made a full recovery. Without the officers’ swift actions, he wouldn’t have survived.
Back to Back Bravery: Stabbing Victim Saved
Just hours later, at 00:32 on 27 August, the pair were called to Teale Street, E2 after reports of a stabbing. Again first on scene, they found a man stabbed in the chest. PC McCarthy grabbed a bandage while PC Rahman applied pressure to stem the bleeding.
Paramedics took over and rushed the victim to hospital. Doctors said without the quick first aid from PC Rahman and PC McCarthy, survival chances would have been slim.
Two Cops on a Mission: “We Saved Lives”
“No two shifts are ever the same,” said PC Rahman. “But we join the force to be there when people truly need us. Staying calm and working as a team was key. I’m so glad we helped save lives.”
PC McCarthy added: “We face serious incidents every day, but this shift went beyond anything we expected. I’m proud we rose to the challenge.”
Chief Superintendent Praises “Incredible” Officers
Detective Chief Superintendent Marcus Barnett, commander for policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, praised the heroic duo.
“I am immensely proud of Mabz and Ryan. Their skill and quick thinking in two intense situations saved lives. They’re a credit to the Met and show the incredible work officers do every day.”
