Two Motorcyclists Sentenced After Deadly 93mph Crash in Southampton
Two daredevil bikers who tore through Southampton at a reckless 93mph, causing a horrific crash that left a cyclist with life-changing injuries, have finally faced justice.
High-Speed Horror on The Avenue
Daniel Peach, 23, from Hook, and James Phillips, 25, from West End, were caught speeding along The Avenue in the early hours of January 16, 2016. Court heard they blasted through the street at speeds between 85 and 93mph, far above the limit.
A 24-year-old female cyclist was turning right near the Cowherds pub when Phillips narrowly missed her, swerving sharply to avoid a collision. Tragically, Peach was not so lucky and slammed into the cyclist, causing horrific injuries.
Serious Injuries and Severe Sentences
- The cyclist suffered two broken legs, a broken arm, and a broken wrist, all needing skin grafts and multiple operations.
- Peach sustained serious head injuries in the crash.
Peach pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to 14 months behind bars and banned from driving for three years.
Phillips, admitting to dangerous driving, received a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years, 100 hours of unpaid work, a three-month curfew, and a three-year driving ban.
Police Warn Against Speeding Risks
Sgt Rik Grant, senior investigating officer, blasted the riders’ reckless behaviour:
“This was a totally avoidable collision which has left an innocent young woman with injuries so serious that her life will never be the same again.”
“Both riders chose to risk lives by speeding dangerously down one of Southampton’s main roads. It is sheer luck nobody died that night.”
He added the victim continues to endure endless surgeries trying to recover from the devastating injuries.
“I hope this serves as a stark warning — speeding, no matter how empty the road seems, is never worth the risk. The consequences can be devastating.”
