Teen Jailed for Stabbing Woman in Brighton Street Attack

A 17-year-old boy has been locked up for two years after stabbing a woman in Brighton, leaving her with a serious head wound. The shocking assault unfolded on Saturday, 25 May, in Church Place.

Attack Sparks from Verbal Row on the Street

The violent incident kicked off with a verbal spat between the teen and a 37-year-old woman walking opposite him. Witnesses heard the youth claim she had “disrespected him” and say “voices in his head told him to ‘do her in’” before launching the brutal attack. He then fled, leaving the victim badly injured.

Emergency teams rushed the woman to hospital where she was treated for a serious stab wound. She’s now recovering at home after being discharged.

Speedy Arrest and Guilty Plea

The suspect was nabbed two days later, on Monday 27 May. Charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a weapon in public, he pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court the next day. He was held in juvenile detention ahead of sentencing.

On Friday, 4 October, the teen returned to court and was handed a two-year detention and training order.

Police Warn Against Knife Crime Violence

Detective Constable Manni Guffogg, who led the probe, said: “This deeply concerning attack, sparked by a minor provocation, shows the serious harm knife crime causes. We must keep educating people about the dangers of carrying knives.”

“People need to understand that no slight is worth this kind of brutal violence. The victim showed courage in helping police despite difficult circumstances,” he added.

DC Guffogg also praised Sussex Police and the Crown Prosecution for their “tireless work” in securing a quick conviction.

Sussex Police urge anyone who suspects someone is carrying a knife to report it online or call 101. In emergencies, always dial 999 immediately.
