Chaos at King’s Cross: Trackside Fire Sparks Major Delays
King’s Cross commuters brace for disruption today after a trackside fire near Stevenage has wreaked havoc on train services. National Rail warns delays of up to 90 minutes with numerous cancellations across key routes.
Fire Hits Stevenage Signal Cables
Firefighters were scrambled earlier to tackle flames affecting signal cables close to Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Though the blaze is now out, the damage to vital railway infrastructure has caused widespread delays for trains traveling to and from London King’s Cross, Hull, Edinburgh, Brighton, and Newcastle.
Network Rail Sounds Alarm
Network Rail urges passengers not to travel unless absolutely necessary amidst the chaos. The trouble follows another earlier incident where a person was struck by a train between Broxbourne and Cheshunt, adding further delays on the Greater Anglia network.
Paul Rutter, Network Rail East Coast route director, said: “We’re sorry to passengers impacted by the lineside fire at Stevenage today and the ongoing disruption. Our engineers are working to repair the damage, but services will face major disruption for the rest of the day.”
Alternative Routes to Keep You Moving
To ease the pain, National Rail confirmed that delayed passengers can use alternative routes at no extra cost. Tickets are being accepted on these services:
- Avanti West Coast between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston
- CrossCountry via any reasonable route
- East Midlands Railway between Sheffield/Leicester and London St Pancras International
- Greater Anglia between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street
- LNER, London Underground, Northern, and TransPennine Express via any reasonable route
Ongoing Delays Expected
Network Rail has confirmed “significant damage” to signalling equipment, leading to a sharply reduced service throughout the day. Passengers are urged to check live travel updates regularly and seek alternative routes where possible.
For now, it’s a day of patience for anyone trying to get through King’s Cross — check before you travel and stay safe.
