Unlicensed driver jailed for over two years after deadly crash that killed young biker

A reckless driver with no licence has been locked up for two years and four months after killing a 21-year-old motorcyclist. Garry Arnold, 58, from Banstead, made a fatal U-turn while trying to head to the loo, smashing into Ben Holmes on Ranmore Common Road, Dorking, Surrey.

Fatal U-turn Gone Wrong

The crash happened on 4 November 2022 when Arnold cut across traffic attempting a risky manoeuvre into a gravel area. Ben, a recent Kingston University grad planning to move to Australia for a work placement, was hit at speed and died at the scene despite desperate efforts to save him.

Arnold’s Deception and Guilty Plea

A police probe revealed Arnold’s licence had been revoked and he failed to judge the speed of the oncoming bike. Trying to dodge blame, he gave officers a false name and DOB at the scene. Arnold later pleaded guilty to:

  • Causing death by careless driving
  • Driving without a licence causing death
  • Perverting the course of justice

Family’s Heartbreaking Tribute

Ben’s devastated parents Stephen and Eleanor described their son as “a warm and loving young man” and said the family was “heartbroken beyond comprehension.”

“Ben made us proud every single day. He was full of life and truly amazing. His sudden death has left a void in our family that can never be filled.”

They thanked Surrey Police for their “determined” and “compassionate” investigation.

Police Slam Reckless Behaviour

Detective Amilia Bishop of Surrey Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:

“Arnold not only performed a manoeuvre which he simply did not have the time to do, he then deliberately misled officers to cover up the fact that his licence had been revoked. His actions have robbed a family of their son and they will live with that pain forever.”

She praised members of the public and emergency services for their swift response, adding: “I hope the sentence sends a clear message: dangerous driving has consequences—and those who break the law will be held accountable.”

Ben’s tragic death highlights the devastating toll of careless and unlicensed driving. Calls are growing for stricter crackdowns on disqualified drivers and increased road safety awareness.
