Wayne Couzens Loses Appeal Over Sarah Everard Murder Sentence
Wayne Couzens, the disgraced former police officer who raped and murdered Sarah Everard, has failed in his bid to reduce his life sentence. The appeal was rejected by Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett and four other senior judges on Friday.
First Life Sentence of Its Kind
Couzens was handed a whole life order — meaning no possibility of parole — marking the first time such a sentence was given for a single adult murder not linked to terrorism. His lawyers argued that while decades behind bars were deserved, a life sentence without release was too harsh.
But the judges firmly disagreed. Lord Burnett ruled the sentencing judge acted well within their rights given the horrific nature of Couzens’ crimes.
Justice Served Alongside Another Double Murderer
Couzens’ appeal was heard alongside that of Ian Stewart, a double murderer who killed his wife and, six years later, his fiancée. Both men will spend the rest of their lives in prison, ensuring no chance of freedom for their terrible offences.
