Police Scotland ramps up crackdown with six new arrests, total hits 32!
In a bold move against serious organised crime, Police Scotland has boosted its arrest tally to 32. The latest swoops targeted gang strongholds across Glasgow and North Lanarkshire as part of the hardcore Operation Silhouette.
Armed Raids Smash Gang Bases
Detectives from the Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism Unit, backed by armed officers, stormed homes in Barlanark, Maryhill, Hamiltonhill, Milton of Campsie, and Wishaw.
The haul? Class B drugs and a whopping £46,000 in cash, revealing the deep pockets behind these ruthless networks.
Who’s Behind Bars?
- Two men (26 & 31) from Glasgow face charges of conspiracy to murder and directing organised crime.
- One man (36) charged with conspiracy to murder.
- One man (26) nabbed for drug offences.
- One man (57) hit with proceeds of crime charges.
- One man (42) in Wishaw arrested for serious organised crime involvement.
Police Chief Sends Clear Message
Detective Chief Superintendent David Ferry hammered home the police’s determination: “These arrests continue to highlight the hard work and dedication of our officers. We are sending a clear message: organised crime has no place in our communities.”
He urged locals to come forward with any info to help ongoing probes.
Operation Silhouette: The Big Picture
- 36 arrests made since launch.
- Seized 116kg of cocaine, 140kg of cannabis, and over £1.5 million in cash.
- Struck over a dozen suspected gang networks across East and West Scotland.
Running under Scotland’s Serious Organised Crime Strategy, the operation teams up with the National Crime Agency and the Scottish Crime Campus in Gartcosh.
Community Voices and Rising Fears
Residents and social media have reacted strongly. One X user cheered: “Finally! Glad to see Police Scotland cracking down on these gangs.”
Another warned: “Still not safe to walk in parts of Glasgow. More needs to be done.”
The raids come amid growing tension after firebomb attacks that seriously injured a 72-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy.
Scotland’s Drug Crisis: Still a Deadly Threat
Scotland continues to bear Europe’s highest drug-related death toll, with 589 suspected fatalities recorded in early 2024 alone. Experts stress that police action alone won’t solve the crisis, calling for stronger addiction support and rehab services.
Turning Crime Cash into Youth Hope
Thanks to Scotland’s CashBack for Communities scheme, assets seized from criminals are being funneled into youth programmes and educational projects. The goal: stop young people falling prey to gangs in the first place.
