A fierce blaze ripped through a three-storey block of flats on Tollgate Road, Beckton, leaving one dead and five injured.

Rescue Chaos: Helicopters and Crews Scramble to Scene

Five ambulance teams and a rescue helicopter scrambled to the raging fire, which broke out on Thursday afternoon. Flames were seen licking the third-floor windows as terrified residents fled.

“There was a bit of smoke, and one of my colleagues said, ‘call the police,'” said the manager of a nearby shop. That’s what I saw as soon as I stepped out – a massive fire.

People Forced to Jump as Flames Engulf the Building

Witnesses reported frantic scenes with several residents jumping from the burning building to escape the heat and smoke.

The fire started spreading from the balcony, quickly engulfing the first and second floors. The staircase between floors was also alight, trapping some inside.

Emergency Services Swarm the Site

The london-fire.gov.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="London Fire Brigade" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">London Fire Brigade was alerted at 5.24pm and sent six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from East Ham, Plaistow, Barking and nearby stations.

Police, London Ambulance Service, and the Fire Brigade are all on scene actively tackling the blaze.

Road closures are currently in place on Tollgate Road, Bradley Stone Road, and Valiant Way as emergency services manage the incident.

Investigation Underway as Cause Remains Unknown

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Authorities confirmed one fatality and multiple injuries but have yet to release further details.

Both the Met Police and London Fire Brigade have been approached for comment as inquiries continue.
