Smoke Alarm Saves Family From Blaze in Kent
Andy was enjoying a quiet night watching TV with his daughter on 14th May when the unthinkable happened. Their hallway smoke alarm suddenly blared. Thinking it was a false alarm, his daughter went to check – only to be hit by “sheets of flames” shooting from the basement door.
Firefighters Praise Early Warning
Andy credits Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) for their rapid response and urges everyone in Kent to keep smoke alarms working at home. “Having a smoke alarm saved our lives,” he said. “It alerted us early. We got out and dialled 999. The fire crew were fantastic.”
The fire, sparked by a faulty electrical battery, wrecked the basement and left smoke and soot damage across the house. Firefighters warned the damage could have been far worse without the early alarm.
Heartbreak and Warning From the Frontline
Despite losing cherished items, Andy’s relief is palpable: “The important thing is that we’re alive. Smoke alarms gave us the precious minutes to escape before the toxic fumes took hold.”
His warning is simple: “If you don’t have smoke alarms, get them now. When you hear the alarm, don’t hesitate—get outside and call 999. Your stuff can be replaced, your life can’t.”
KFRS Urges Simple Precautions to Save Lives
Leanne McMahon, KFRS Area Manager, said: “A smoke alarm alerts you immediately, giving everyone time to escape. They’re cheap, easy to install and maintain, available at most stores.”
She advises fitting smoke alarms on every floor, testing weekly, and placing them where you can hear them throughout the house. Kent Fire and Rescue Service offers free guidance on installation and home fire safety.
