Tory Espionage Scandal Rocking Westminster: Two Men Arrested for Spying for China

In a bombshell spy drama, two men have been arrested under the Official Secrets Act over allegations of spying tied to a parliamentary researcher linked to China. The news has shaken the political corridors of power across the UK.

Spy Suspects Nabbed in Oxfordshire and Edinburgh

The parliamentary researcher involved had close connections with heavyweight Tory MPs, including security minister Tom Tugendhat and foreign affairs committee chair Alicia Kearns. The two men were arrested on March 13, suspected of spying for Beijing, according to the Sunday Times.

One man, in his 30s, was detained in Oxfordshire; the other, in his 20s, was picked up in Edinburgh. The Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command – the top squad for espionage cases – is leading the investigation.

Official Secrets Act Charges and Extensive Police Raids

The suspects face charges under Section 1 of the Official Secrets Act 1911, dealing with acts “prejudicial to the safety or interests of the state.” Police raided their homes plus a third address in east London. Both men were held at a south London station and have since been released on bail until early October.

Bitter Political Fallout and China Concerns

Tom Tugendhat says he hasn’t had contact with the researcher since becoming security minister last September. Alicia Kearns refused to comment, stressing the need not to hamper the investigation.

The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China slammed the infiltration, warning it shows Beijing’s aggressive effort to undermine UK Parliament’s influential voices. This scandal hits soon after Foreign Secretary James Cleverly’s Beijing trip, which sparked anger among hardline Tory critics of China’s regime.

Former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith called it “a chilling reminder of the growing threat from China under Xi Jinping.” Meanwhile, Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee flagged Beijing’s “prolific and aggressive” targeting of the UK back in July.

Security Services on High Alert Amid Political Tensions

MI5 raised the alarm last year over a suspected Chinese spy involved in “political interference activities.” Downing Street and the House of Commons remain tight-lipped, citing security reasons.

Labour’s shadow home secretary stressed Britain must mount a strong, coordinated response to security threats from China and others, following this explosive revelation.
