Banbury Woman Arrested in Crackdown on Albanian People Smugglers
A 31-year-old woman was arrested this morning at a Banbury, Oxfordshire address. She faces suspicion of facilitating illegal immigration and is currently in custody for questioning.
NCA Takes on Ruthless Albanian Smuggling Gangs
Jacque Beer, Regional Head of Investigations at the National Crime Agency (NCA), revealed the investigation targets Albanian organised crime groups acting as brokers for illegal migration.
“People smugglers only care about money, they don’t care about migrants’ safety or security.
Channel crossings are utterly perilous which is why disrupting and dismantling criminal networks is a priority for the NCA and our partners.
This is an international problem, with people smugglers targeting multiple countries. These criminal groups are transnational, making international law enforcement collaboration essential. We are targeting offenders at every stage — from source, in transit, to destination.”
Top Brass Back Operation to Smash Smugglers
The raid was part of ongoing NCA action against organised people smuggling, with NCA Director General Graeme Biggar and Home Secretary Suella Braverman attending.
Biggar said: “Tackling organised people smuggling is a priority. This threat exploits the vulnerable, spans continents and borders, and is driven using technology.”
“The NCA is working tirelessly, both here and internationally, to keep the UK safe from these serious criminals.”
Braverman added: “Today’s operation sends a clear message: we will bring to justice the gangs behind deadly Channel crossings. We use every tool to disrupt their business, deter illegal migration, and save lives. No stone will be left unturned.”
Crackdowns Across Europe Target Smuggling Networks
- Two weeks ago, a joint NCA-Spanish Guardia Civil operation dismantled an Albanian smuggling gang moving migrants via Spain to the UK through ferry and freight routes to Portsmouth, Southampton, and Liverpool.
- Seven suspects were arrested following the operation.
- Migrants reportedly pay between €3,000 and €15,000 each for these perilous journeys.
- On 7 October, NCA arrested a 30-year-old Albanian man in Surbiton, London, accused of coordinating migrant crossings from France by small boat.
The NCA currently juggles over 60 live investigations targeting top-tier organised immigration crime and human trafficking rings. Much of the illicit activity originates outside the UK, driving enhanced international cooperation, especially with France and Belgium.
NCA officers are stationed abroad to share intelligence and work hand-in-hand with foreign enforcement in joint operations aimed at cutting off the migrant smuggling lifeline.
