Man, 49, Stabbed to Death on Cranwood Street in Early Hours

Police launched a murder probe after a stabbing in Cranwood Street, EC1, at around 3am on Boxing Day, 26 December.

Fatal Stabbing Shocks Boxing Day Morning

Officers and paramedics rushed to the scene after reports of a stabbing. They found a 49-year-old man seriously injured. Despite all efforts, he died at the scene.

The victim has been named as Michael John Murphy, pending formal identification. His family have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.

Police Appeal for Witnesses After Group Argument

Detective Chief Inspector Kelly Allen from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said:

“We’re piecing together what happened before Michael was stabbed. There was an argument involving up to ten people in the street just moments before the attack. Residents may have heard or seen something.”

“Anyone who witnessed anything in the Cranwood Street area on Boxing Day morning should come forward.”

Local Police Commanders Offer Condolences and Reassure Residents

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, responsible for Hackney and Tower Hamlets policing, added:

“Our thoughts are with Michael’s family at this unimaginably difficult time. The fact this happened over Christmas will shock many.”

“Specialist detectives and local officers have been gathering evidence, and local patrols will continue. We thank residents for their patience.”
