Three Men Nabbed in High-Tech Shoplifting Spree Across Northern Ireland
Police have arrested three men following a string of brazen thefts from stores in Belfast, Newry, Lisburn, and Bangor. The crime spree, stretching over at least seven incidents across September and October, saw luxury gadgets and cash snatched, including a £1,399 laptop, the latest iPhone 14 Pro Max, six other new mobiles, £1,450 cash, and keys to a secure cabinet.
Staff Spot Suspicious Trio, Police Move In
The caper came to a swift halt on Monday, 17th October, when a sharp-eyed electronics store employee spotted three men behaving oddly. Noticing they matched a circulated description of suspected shoplifters, the staff member alerted the police.
The suspects quickly fled in a BMW but were stopped by the Police Service’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Intercept Team near Sprucefield. The men, aged 20, 20, and 19, were arrested on multiple charges including theft, attempted theft, burglary, and being equipped for theft. They remain in custody.
Crackdown Hits Business Crime During National Week of Action
The arrests come amid a national week of action aimed at cracking down on business crime. Police are ramping up high-visibility patrols in town centres and working closely with local firms to stamp out shoplifting and related offences.
Chief Superintendent Darrin Jones, lead on business crime at the PSNI, said: “This week of action brings police and partners together to tackle the key issues of business crime in our communities.”
“These arrests show how vital reporting is — it was that eagle-eyed staff member’s tip-off that led to these suspects being caught.”
“We know under-reporting is a big problem across all sectors. So we urge business owners: If you’re a victim or spot something dodgy, tell us. Your reports help us target resources, catch offenders, and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.”
