Thieves Strike in Herne Bay Shops – Police Issue Urgent Warning

Kent Police are on alert after three thefts rocked Herne Bay last weekend (9-10 July). In each case, shoppers returned to find their bags mysteriously unzipped and purses pinched during quick store visits.

How Crooks Hit Victims

All incidents involved victims leaving their handbags unattended—often on prams, wheelchairs, or shopping trolleys—while browsing inside shops. Opportunist thieves took full advantage of the easy targets.

Police Warn: Stay Sharp, Don’t Get Picked Off

“While these offences aren’t common in Herne Bay, our officers remain vigilant. Shoppers must also be cautious to avoid falling victim to opportunist thieves,” said Inspector Thomas Mepstead of Canterbury’s Community Safety Unit.

His top tips:

  • Never leave handbags unattended on prams, trolleys, wheelchairs, or mobility scooters.
  • Keep bags zipped and always in sight.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Use a purse chain if you have one—it’s a proven theft deterrent.
