PC Delivers Baby on Devon Road – Calls It ‘Surreal’
A Devon & Cornwall police officer has pulled off a miraculous roadside delivery – and says it’s the highlight of her 18-month career.
Officer Gemma Clatworthy’s Unexpected Birth Duty
PC Gemma Clatworthy was heading out from Middlemoor police HQ in Exeter just before 4pm on Sunday, 27 December, when she spotted a woman in labour. Lucy Kelly was in the passenger seat of her parked car on Honiton Road, ready to give birth.
“Lucy’s partner flagged down a police van, and a PSCO from it signalled us to stop,” said 28-year-old PC Clatworthy. “I ran over and saw the baby’s head already crowning. When Lucy said she needed to push, I held my hands under her and the baby just came straight out.”
The newborn, Lily Haggar, let out an adorable yawn and stretch seconds later – a sure sign she was okay.
‘Totally Focused’ Officer Saves The Day
Lily arrived at 4.04pm to proud parents Lucy, 25, and Chris Haggar, 30, from Cranbrook. PC Clatworthy stayed calm throughout, focusing only on keeping mum and baby safe.
“It felt surreal to have brought a life into the world. It’s not something I ever thought I’d experience,” she said.
Gemma, who has faced plenty of tough situations including the dramatic Pinhoe Sainsbury’s car park incident, admits she’s driven by a passion to help people.
“I’ve never wanted to be anything other than a police officer. The job’s about helping people,” she said. “This experience is definitely one for the books.”
New Mum Praises Police Hero
Lucy, who also has an 18-month-old daughter, Olivia, said she was “relieved” when Gemma arrived and took charge.
“There was no panic, just shock at having to give birth by the roadside with no painkillers,” Lucy said. “When Gemma got there, I felt safe straight away.”
The family had left their Cranbrook home just 10 minutes earlier when labour took a swift turn.
PC Clatworthy has stayed in touch with Lucy via Facebook, sharing a bond forged in a truly unforgettable moment.
