GB News Slapped with £100k Fine Over Rishi Sunak Show
Ofcom has hit GB News with a hefty £100,000 fine after branding their programme featuring then-PM Rishi Sunak as biased. The show, People’s Forum: The Prime Minister, aired on February 12 and let the public grill Sunak live. But with over 500 complaints flooding in, Ofcom launched an investigation—and slammed GB News for breaching impartiality rules.
Ofcom Says GB News Broke Impartiality Rules
The regulator’s probe revealed the broadcast failed to uphold the strict fairness standards expected of UK broadcasters. Ofcom said the coverage was skewed, undermining impartiality.
GB News Boss Hits Back: “Attack on Free Speech”
GB News CEO Angelos Frangopoulos blasted the ruling as “a direct attack on free speech and journalism in the United Kingdom.” He branded the fine “unnecessary, unfair, and unlawful” and vowed to fight back. GB News plans to mount a judicial review against Ofcom’s decision.
Fine on Ice Pending Legal Challenge
Although Ofcom announced the fine in May, enforcing the £100,000 penalty is now on hold until the judicial review wraps up. The showdown over media impartiality isn’t over yet.
