First-Ever Policing Pact Between Train Operator and BTP Set to Tackle Crime on the Rails
Groundbreaking Deal Aims to Boost Rail Safety
In a UK first, a train operating company has sealed a policing partnership with the British Transport Police (BTP) to tackle crime and improve security on the rail network.
The new pact aligns with BTP’s 2022-23 Policing Plan and Govia Thameslink Railway’s (GTR) safety goals. It lays out four key priorities for the year ahead:
- Stamping out inappropriate sexual behaviour on trains and stations
- Spotting and protecting vulnerable passengers
- Cracking down on assaults against railway staff, with stronger prosecution
- Boosting engagement to raise passenger and colleague confidence
Senior Chiefs Pledge Tough Action on Rail Crime
Chief Superintendent Martin Fry signed on behalf of the BTP, calling the move “a really positive step” towards safer railways. He said the partnership will create “meaningful objectives” with joint performance tracking to slash crime and lift security for all passengers.
Tom Moran, Managing Director of GTR’s TLGN division, hailed the pact as setting “the groundwork for even closer collaboration.” Moran added: “We’ll hold each other to account at every level to keep our customers and colleagues safe.”
