Border Force Death Probe Underway at Manchester Airport

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a full investigation after a 27-year-old man died following his arrest by Border Force officers at Manchester Airport on Wednesday, 19 February.

What Happened at Manchester Airport?

The man caught the attention of Border Force officers for acting strangely just before his flight. Officers arrested him and took him to a holding area inside the airport.

While in custody, the man fell ill. Paramedics were called but, tragically, he was pronounced dead at 1:53 pm.

The Home Office quickly referred the case to the IOPC, which swung into action by 4:29 pm that day. Investigators immediately began gathering evidence, including CCTV footage, bodycam recordings, and witness statements from Border Force staff and medics.

IOPC Director Issues Statement

“First and foremost, our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones, as well as all those affected by his death,” said IOPC Director Amanda Rowe.

“When someone dies after being taken into custody, it is important for there to be a thorough investigation to understand what has happened. We have been in touch with the man’s family to explain our role and will keep them updated as the investigation progresses.”

Rowe confirmed the investigation is in its early stages. No details about the man’s identity or why he was arrested have been released yet.

IOPC to Scrutinise Arrest and Treatment

The probe will focus on:

  • The reasons behind the man’s arrest.
  • How Border Force officers treated him in custody.
  • Whether medical help was offered promptly and sufficiently.
  • Possible breaches of protocol by officers.

Post-mortem and toxicology tests will determine the exact cause of death. The IOPC vows to keep the victim’s family updated throughout.

Calls for Transparency and Witness Appeal

The case has reignited concerns about how detainees are treated at UK airports. Campaigners demand a full review of Border Force detention methods.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We are fully cooperating with the IOPC’s investigation and extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased. We are committed to ensuring all procedures meet the highest standards and await the outcome of this independent investigation.”

The IOPC urges anyone who witnessed the incident at Manchester Airport to come forward. Witnesses can contact the IOPC via their hotline or through their official website to help uncover the truth.

More updates will follow as the investigation continues.
