45-Year-Old Man Dies After Arrest in South Norwood

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a probe into the death of a 45-year-old man who died shortly after being arrested and restrained by Metropolitan Police officers in South Norwood, South London.

What Happened on the Night?

The tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, February 16, at a High Street home in South Norwood. Police were called around 1:30am amid fears a child may have been assaulted.

Officers arrested the man on the scene, handcuffing him. Bodycam footage shows the suspect resisting and being restrained on a bed while visibly agitated. Concerned for his condition, cops called the London Ambulance Service (LAS).

Despite medical aid, the man’s condition deteriorated. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead around 3:40am. So far, his identity has not been confirmed. A post-mortem has taken place, with further tests pending to establish the cause of death.

IOPC Launches Independent Investigation

  • Body-worn camera footage is being closely examined.
  • Witness statements have been collected, and CCTV from nearby is being reviewed.
  • Officers involved have given initial and follow-up accounts.

IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said:

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends, and all those affected by his death. We understand their concerns and those of the community. We are conducting a thorough, robust, and independent investigation into all circumstances surrounding his death.”

Rowe confirmed the IOPC is in touch with the man’s partner and will keep the family updated as the investigation unfolds.

Community Shock and What’s Next?

The death has sent shockwaves through the local area, raising tough questions about police conduct and the use of force, especially involving people in mental health crises or distress.

The IOPC promises a transparent, impartial inquiry focusing on:

  • Whether the force used during arrest and restraint was appropriate.
  • The timeliness and quality of medical care provided.
  • If police followed proper protocols and training.

The Metropolitan Police say they are fully cooperating with investigators. The IOPC will continue to interview witnesses and collect evidence over the coming weeks.

Once complete, their findings could lead to disciplinary actions or recommendations for change within the Met.

The IOPC urges anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to step forward.
