Drunken Yobs Spark Chaos in Maidstone After England’s Wembley Defeat
Kent Police faced a nightmare Sunday night after England’s loss at Wembley. Furious fans unleashed fury on officers, sparking violent disorder in Maidstone town centre.
Police Backed by Dog Units and Public Order Officers
Roughly around 11pm, angry mobs hurled bottles, flares, and other missiles at police trying to keep the peace. The situation got so bad dog handlers and public order units were called in to restore order.
Doors staff even pitched in to help police hold the line. At one point, men were caught pounding each other with punches, some needing medical treatment. One yob even flashed officers while others threatened violence.
Multiple Arrests and Injuries After Violent Clashes
- Several officers were injured after being hit by thrown objects, with one officer knocked to the ground.
- Police arrested multiple suspects involved in the violent disorder.
- A private vehicle was vandalised in the chaos.
Chief Superintendent Warren Franklin said: “The vast majority of people in Kent behaved responsibly throughout Sunday. However, after the game, groups in Maidstone chose to engage in disorder, throwing bottles at officers and causing damage.”
“Nine officers reported assaults, with five needing medical treatment. Thankfully, no serious injuries were sustained. Two men remain in custody following the disorder.”
“We are reviewing bodycam footage to identify further suspects. Anyone with information or footage should contact us on 01622 604100 quoting incident 11-1429 for Maidstone or 11-1201 for other locations.”
Town Lockdown as Police Battle Tough Crowd
The violent disruption forced parts of Maidstone into lockdown. Officers were seen running to intervene, carrying a man away as projectiles flew. Despite their efforts, grown men tried to attack officers protecting those making arrests.
Kent Police emphasised most fans behaved well, but warned troublemakers they won’t escape justice. The force continues to investigate and gather evidence to bring offenders to account.
