Major Incident Declared as Thousands Swamp BCP Beaches on Hottest Day
A major incident has been declared after thousands ignored warnings and flooded BCP Council beaches on the hottest day of the year so far.
Emergency services have been stretched to breaking point, prompting a multi-agency response to tackle parking chaos, trash overload, anti-social behaviour, and gridlock.
Council Leader Condemns ‘Irresponsible’ Visitors
BCP Council Leader Vikki Slade blasted the scenes at Bournemouth and Sandbanks over the past 48 hours as “absolutely appalling.”
“The irresponsible behaviour and actions of so many people is just shocking and our services are stretched to the absolute hilt trying to keep everyone safe. We have had no choice but to declare a major incident and initiate an emergency response,” she said.
The beaches saw:
- 558 parking fines issued—the highest on record
- Illegal overnight camping with evictions underway
- Huge waste surges: 8 tonnes collected between just two piers in one day, plus 33 tonnes removed from the entire coastline this morning
- Heavily congested roads causing gridlock into the early hours
- Rise in alcohol-fuelled fights and anti-social behaviour
Emergency Measures Kick In: Police and Crews Under Fire
Crews faced abuse while clearing overflowing bins; security has now been increased to protect them. Additional police patrols are tackling anti-social behaviour and enforcing parking rules.
Signs warning that the area is full are up on all approach roads, and seafront ranger patrols are targeting overnight campers.
Public health messages urge visitors to stay hydrated amid prolonged traffic queues.
Police Plead with Public: Stay Away from Beaches
Assistant Chief Constable Sam de Reya of Dorset Police delivered a stark warning:
“These are unprecedented times. We urge people to stay away from Bournemouth Beach and other Dorset beaches. We are deploying extra resources to keep the peace and safeguard the public.”
He added:
“We rely on people to take personal responsibility. The huge crowds add pressure on emergency services during a public health crisis. Please think twice before heading here and bear with us if you are already affected.”
The message is clear: stay away from BCP beaches or expect chaos.
