Knife-Wielding Romanian Shot Dead After Stun Grenade, Baton Round and Taser Fail

Armed Stand-Off at Derby Police Station Ends in Fatal Shooting

Marius Ciolac, 35, was shot once in the abdomen outside Ascot Drive police station in Derby after a dramatic stand-off involving multiple police weapons. Before the fatal gunshot, armed officers tried to subdue the knife-wielding Romanian national with a stun grenade, a baton round, and a Taser — all unsuccessful, says the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Violent Scene Unfolded in Police Car Park

The incident unfolded around 9:55am last Friday when police spotted Ciolac causing havoc at the station car park. He smashed glass doors and windows, wielding three knives recovered at the scene. Armed response officers were called in. The final shot was fired roughly 35 minutes later at 10:30am. Despite first aid from officers and paramedics, Ciolac later died in Nottingham hospital.

IOPC Launches Full Investigation, Appeals for Calm

IOPC regional head Derrick Campbell said: “We have contacted Mr Ciolac’s family in Romania and Italy to express our condolences. We urge the public to hold off speculation out of respect for the family and those involved.”

The watchdog confirmed they are reviewing CCTV, police bodycam footage, and witness statements. Ballistic tests on the police firearm are ongoing. Campbell added: “We remain committed to a thorough investigation and are speaking to every potential witness.”
