Man in Balaclava Arrested with Knife Near Southport Vigil
A 32-year-old man wearing a balaclava and carrying a knife was arrested tonight just yards away from a vigil for the children killed in yesterday’s shocking stabbing attack in Southport.
Merseyside Police Act Fast to Nab Suspect
Merseyside Police confirmed the swift arrest on suspicion of possessing a bladed article. Detective Inspector Gavin Mulcahy blasted knife crime following the incident, saying the quick police response prevented further danger.
A police statement revealed:
“We arrested a man and seized a flick knife after reports of a man seen with a knife on Eastbank Street at 6.50pm. Officers arrived promptly and detained the man about five minutes later. Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident.”
Community Mourns Amid Rising Knife Crime Fears
The suspect, from Standish, was taken into custody. The arrest shook the local community, already reeling from the recent stabbing tragedy.
Detective Inspector Mulcahy said, “Knife crime has a devastating impact on victims, families, and communities. This took place close to where thousands gathered for a vigil to mourn those affected by the recent Southport attack.”
He praised officers for their rapid actions: “We seized a dangerous weapon and made a swift arrest. People who carry knives have no place in our streets. We rely on the public to help us spot and stop those who endanger others.”
Police Urge Public to Speak Up
