£5.8 Million Overhaul Set to Transform Newhaven Fort

Newhaven Fort, the beloved historic landmark in Newhaven, is gearing up for a £5.8 million facelift. The massive restoration kicks off at the end of this summer, aiming to preserve the fort’s heritage while upgrading facilities for future visitors.

Fort Closing in 2024 for Big Renovations

The funding, courtesy of the Newhaven Town Deal fund, will fuel an extensive refurbishment from late 2023 through 2024. To get the job done, the fort will shut its doors temporarily in 2024, with a grand reopening planned for spring 2025—just in time for eager tourists and locals alike.

Exciting Upgrades and History Brought to Life

  • Revamped access to gun emplacements
  • Fresh exhibitions on the home front and D-Day
  • Restored barrack rooms and the Romney Hut
  • New visitor experience at the battery observation post
  • Revitalised adventure playground

Duncan Kerr, Chief Executive of Wave Leisure Trust, called the project a “defining moment” in the fort’s storied history. He stressed the importance of safeguarding such landmarks and is proud to help steer the renovation. Kerr added the closure will let contractors work faster in a secure environment, possibly wrapping up ahead of time.

Fixing Weather Woes and Modernising Facilities

Beyond visible changes, the restoration tackles persistent structural issues caused by years of weather wear and tear. Plans include:

  • Protecting against water damage with brickwork repointing and window repairs
  • Comprehensive refurbishment of visitor toilets
  • Upgrades to electrical systems and power supplies

Councillor Johnny Denis, Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture, Tourism & Leisure, praised Newhaven Fort’s special place in the community. He hailed the renovation as a fantastic chance for residents and visitors to relish this unique historical gem for generations to come.
